We were delighted to welcome Sensei Matt Price back to Bristol Karate Academy last weekend, for three and a half hours of top quality karate.

Matt  Sensei is no stranger to the Academy. As our first ever guest instructor and the guest who has visited us more than any other – 16 times in total – we were glad he was able to make the trip to share his fun yet functional brand of karate with us once again. Matt Sensei’s relaxed and fun style of teaching helps make the technical points that he explains much more accessible and easy to pick up.

But as well as having lots of fun, the day was also a nervy one for some. In between two classes, our Autumn seminar event doubled as our Academy kyu (coloured belt) grading.

They needn’t have been nervous. We had 43 members attempting their grading, from 12th to 2nd Kyu, and all passed in full. Matt Sensei made special note about the standard he sees when he visits. Congratulations to you all! Now let’s keep it going!

While the morning’s class was a broad session suitable for all grades, the afternoon’s class was focused on training for brown and black belts. The kata of the day was the JKS ‘kicking kata’, Rantai – a new one for most of the attendees and certainly one to test not only the legs but the lungs too!

Matt Sensei finished with kumite drills, including how to close the distance for kicks and how to force your opponent to move their guard to open up attacking opportunities. Those competing at the JKS England National Championships this coming weekend will have a time to practice these against unknowing opponents in just a few days!

Thank you to Matt Sensei  for another fantastic seminar and to our team of helpers for making sure the event ran smoothly. Finally, thank you to everyone who supported the event. Without you, it wouldn’t be possible to host such brilliant events in the South West of England.
