Sunday saw the third of our special #StayAtHome Seminars and yet another opportunity to train with a well-known name in UK Shotokan Karate. This time it was the turn of Sensei Holly Bruce (5th Dan), to take to the screen on Zoom as participants trained in their own living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, sheds and garages!

Holly Sensei was our fourth guest instructor in a row since March to be crowned as a KUGB Grand Champion at the KUGB National Championships (winning both the individual kata and kumite crown in the same year). However she's the only one of these instructors that can boast being a two time, back-to-back Grand Champion, having won the titles in 2012 and 2013. A phenomenal achievement!

Greeted by almost sixty friendly faces from Bristol Karate Academy and guests of the club, Holly Sensei taught a well-planned session. She focused on preparation of kicks and then other movements for executing the most effective, clean techniques.  There was something for everyone, with practical tips on kicking technique and also katas Nijushiho and Heian Nidan.

After 90 minutes of expert instruction, Holly Sensei took questions from the class, with some excellent and insightful answers. One, from member Caroline Walton, was about why she thought more women and girls didn't take part. The answer focused on confidence. As a club we are proud to have a fantastic group of women and girls training and it was a great honour to be able to bring an inspirational female karateka to Bristol Karate Academy to inspire everyone - female and male alike.

Our thanks to Holly Sensei for teaching the class on Sunday, to our members for supporting the event and to our guests from clubs across the UK for joining us - you're always very welcome. If you'd like to join us at a future event then keep an eye out on our website and social media platforms for upcoming seminar announcements!
