The COVID-19 pandemic didn't stop 65 dedicated members and guests of Bristol Karate Academy training hard on Sunday as the club hosted the renowned Sensei Matt Price (6th Dan) - through a video training session! Believed to be the first special seminar of its kind in the UK, members from across Bristol - and guests from across the UK and Ireland - trained hard in their living rooms under the guidance of the former ESKA European Kumite Champion and KUGB Grand Champion.

Sensei Price - who is one of two lead instructors at Leeds Karate Academy - taught from his home dojo in Harrogate and ran through a series of drills that worked brilliantly for karateka that were training in a limited space.  The session was also peppered with drills that Sensei does himself as part of his own training regime, many of which left those that joined both happy and exhausted.

This was Sensei Price's first ever seminar through Zoom, but it was not obvious, as the event went without any major hitch. After training finished we held a Q&A, with Sensei answering a multitude of questions, including whether it was difficult to eat spaghetti such impressive facial hair!

Sunday's seminar was put on by Bristol Karate Academy as a thank you to its members for the fantastic support after a whole week's training through online video service, Zoom. The Academy first held a pilot class on Tuesday 17th March, only 24 hours after the UK government advised against non-essential gatherings, with work taking place from straight after the announcement until 4am the next morning to make sure everything was in place.

The feedback from the event - and the Zoom classes more generally - has been exceptional. We would like to reiterate our thanks to our members for getting involved. Now that the UK government has signalled a three week period of next to no contact with those outside of our households, both the exercise and social aspects of our Zoom online Karate programme are important for a sense of wellbeing and normality now more than ever.
