As part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, at the Christmas Party we took the opportunity to recognise the successes of some of our members with our first ever awards, including two new perpetual shields.

The Bill Winfield Memorial Shield was introduced for the most outstanding under 16 year old. The award commemorates the late Sensei Bill Winfield, who founded Shotokan Karate in the Bristol area and was also the instructor of Sensei Bryan Gideon, who in turn founded our Backwell dojo. Bill Sensei was brilliant with children and so it is most fitting that his shield will celebrate the success of under 16s at the Academy.

The 'Virtute Et Industria' Shield is now awarded to the most outstanding karateka at the Academy each year. The award is named after the Academy's motto - which it inherits from the city of Bristol - and acknowledges a person that is a great role model in exhibiting the Academy's values.

While there were many deserving karateka at the Academy, the following were presented with awards:
  • VIRTUTE ET INDUSTRIA SHIELD (outstanding karateka): Steven Connell
  • BILL WINFIELD SHIELD (outstanding under 16): Liam Mashford
  • SPECIAL RECOGNITION (over 16): Annaliesa House & Dan Salter
  • SPECIAL RECOGNITION (under 16): Alfie Teague & Brandon Bennett
  • BEST NEWCOMER (over 16): Patrick Reilly
  • BEST NEWCOMER (under 16): Livy Didau & Cameron Mitchell

Congratulations to everyone that won an award and, critically, well done to everyone at the Academy for the sterling effort you put in throughout the year.
