Bristol Karate Academy’s juniors let the charge at this year’s KUGB South West Championships in Exeter, taking medals in both the kata and kumite disciplines.

With three silvers and two bronzes for the Academy it was a case of ‘watch this space for the future’, as members from Nailsea, Backwell and Portishead all picked up gongs.

Backwell School student Josh Mashford put on a mature performance in the Boys’ Kumite (sparring) to take Silver, just seconds away from the Gold, while in the Kata, young Brandon Bennett stunned many of the more experienced and older people in his category to take Silver in a hard fought final. Alfie Teague took the third Silver for the Academy, having got there after a tightly contested semi final against another Academy competitor, Liam Mashford.

In all, our members took home five placings in an event that saw over 200 entries from across the South West:

SILVER in Over 5’3” Boys’ Kumite for Josh Mashford
SILVER in Ippon Kumite for Alfie Teague
SILVER in Novice to 4th Kyu Kata for Brandon Bennett
BRONZE in Team Kata for Dan Salter, Ian Connell and Josh Mashford
BRONZE in Ippon Kumite for Liam Mashford

Well done to everyone that took part!
